The Arctic Monkeys, above, were nominated for seven awards and won three at the annual NME Awards in London, including best band, best video (?Teddy Picker?) and best track (?Fluorescent Adolescent,?), the BBC reported. The awards, named for the music magazine NME (for New Musical Express), are determined by readers, who voted Pete Doherty of Babyshambles ?Hero of the Year,? and President Bush ?Villain of the Year.? Winners of the other major awards included the Killers (best international band); the Enemy (best new band); Muse (best live band); Kate Nash (best solo artist). ?Myths of the Near Future,? by the Klaxons, was voted the best album.

The Department of Agriculture has suspended at least two federal meat inspectors after the largest beef recall in the nation?s history, a union leader said. Stan Painter, chairman of the National Joint Council of Food Inspection Locals, said the department confirmed it had placed a veterinarian and a floor inspector from the Westland/Hallmark Meat Company in Chino on paid leave. A spokeswoman said the agency could not comment on personnel matters. The department recalled 143 million pounds of beef from the Chino slaughterhouse on Feb. 17. The recall came after the Humane Society of the United States released undercover video showing plant workers trying to get sick or crippled animals to stand by shoving and dragging them with forklifts, zapping them with electric prods and aiming water hoses at their faces.
